How to adjust the multiplier?

The multiplier comes from the number of appointments possible in a 3.5-hour session and the average number of sessions to complete an intervention.

Multiplier = Appointments x 11.5 (weeks available) / average number of sessions

Example 1: let’s say you work in a rural outreach service and can only offer 1.5 appointments per session due to travel times. Then the multiplier = 1.5 x 11.5 /7.5 = 2.3

Example 2: perhaps your service has a large number of referrals of children with learning disability (or you are a learning disability CAMHS team). You are sure that the core average treatment duration is 10 due to the slower pace. Then the multiplier is 2 x 11.5/10= 2.3 again. If you do only home visits in core work (and so 1 appointment in a half day) then 1 x 11.5/10= about 1

Caution: it is very easy to feel your treatment average is higher than 7.5 as we notice the families that continue not the ones that stop early. Only adjust if you have good audit data.

TIPS: If you travel a lot, you may find it easier just to add up how much time you spend per week on travel and allocate this in job plans, rather than reducing the Partnership Multiplier- the effect is similar.

You may find your current session average is more than 7.5. But if you are not running CAPA this will include Specific work too, which will increase your average. You should also become more focused and find the service flows better with CAPA. This means running CAPA is likely to reduce your average session number, including for Specific work. So try 3 and if you seem really out of balance, do some investigating to work out why - use the Troubleshooting section to help you.

Does 3 work for all teams?

We think this number will work for most services however, if your local audit suggests that: You cannot offer 2 appointments per half day, perhaps due to long travelling times if you are very rural You need significantly more than 7.5 appointments per family in Core Partnership (perhaps for learning disability teams)

Then reduce the Partnership Multiplier to less than 3.

Specific Work Multiplier

You can work out the multiplier for Specific time using the same maths: Multiplier = Appointments x 11.5 (weeks available) / average number of sessions.

It can be hard to work out the average number of sessions but a rough guide is to audit the next 20 attendees for that Specific work and note which session it is. I.e. 1st, 7th, 3rd, 22nd etc. The average of those 20 is roughly the average for a complete intervention. This is because extra sessions of those continuing are offset by those who have already been discharged.
